You Can't Take It With You

Description

"You can't take it with you." Christina hears her Mother call from the porch. But in her mind she is determined to take Sir Lancelot with her wherever they are going. She still remembers the day her Father gave him to her, that last day she saw her Father alive. He left for the war the next morning and was killed a few months later. It had been a special day for her they had spent it down by the stream fishing and he had read the tale of King Arthur to her again. Then from a cloth bag he had hidden in the wagon he brought forth the bear. She new as soon as she saw him what his name would be.

"You are my guardian,my protector and you shall be named for the greatest of the knights. I dub thee Sir Lancelot knight of the realm." She had loved him from the first look and she would never give him up.

During those long dark nights after her Fathers death he had stood guard over her as she slept and kept the shadows away. No dark things would show their faces in her dreams as long as Sir Lancelot was there to protect her. Her Mother always said she was getting too old for such nonsense and it was time to put the bear away. She just didn't understand how special he was. How much she loved him and how he made her feel as though some part of her Father was inside his fuzzy body.

One day her cousins had come to visit and that awful Corey had thrown Lancelot into the old hollow stump in the front yard. She had tried and tried to get him out but she was too small to reach him. She begged her Mother but she said once again it was time to grow up and leave the childishness behind. She had cried and cried at the loss of her greatest friend. Who would protect her now from the long dark shadows that crept across her bed in the night?

Then came the day everything changed. She had no memory of what had happened that day but the world around her and her Mother had changed into something dreamlike and faded. Things had no substance to them and one day she had walked through the door to her room without opening it. That is when the idea came to her if she could walk through the door then she could get into the stump as well. She could get him back and then everything would be right again. She tried and tried but although she could easily pass into the stump Sir Lancelot could not. But her determination made her think of a new way. She would throw him out and then pick him up outside.

Now she finally had him back and she would never give him up no matter what her Mother said. All she did was talk about moving on to some other place far away from here. Well if this place wouldn't let Sir Lancelot move there as well then she wanted no part of it. She would just stay here and hide from her Mother until she agreed to stay here or let her take him along.

Just a little reminder not all ghost stories are meant to frighten. Some are charming and sweet to hear even on cool autumn nights when all the ghosts and ghouls are knocking at the door. Wishing you a early Happy Halloween and hope you enjoyed my little ghost story and the picture to go with it.
